Prepare for the Next Storm: Gather Your Information (Step 1)

11/4/2021 (Permalink)

Wreckage of a neighborhood destroyed by a tornado Follow these tips from SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield to minimize damage and recover faster from a storm or natural disaster.

Storms come and storms go, and the trick to weathering them is to be prepared! Whether you know there’s a storm heading right toward you and your home or not (yet!), you and your family will be much better off if you prepare now for the inevitable next storm or natural disaster.

We at SERVPRO recommend you take a series of steps to be in the best position possible to minimize storm damage to your home and to get through the storm and its aftermath safely and as comfortably as possible. We recommend starting ASAP on these tasks, because some of them will require planning and time to accomplish. But when you have checked off the items on our list, you’ll be glad that you are as prepared as you can be!

Gather and Store Important Information

The first thing to do to prepare for a storm or natural disaster is to pull together in one place the information you may need if your home or property is damaged or if you need to evacuate. This step can be a bit time-consuming, so we recommend doing it over a weekend or over the course of a couple of weeks.

  • Check your coverage. Review your homeowners coverage with your insurance agent or representative once a year. Consider updating or adding new coverages to reflect your current needs.
  • Gather and protect your documents. You should have a waterproof, fireproof container in which you keep copies of important documents and records, such as identification, passports, birth and marriage certificates, insurance policies, bank and mortgage records, automobile titles and proof of vaccination. You could also protect important keepsakes or family photos in the safe box, if there’s room.
  • Document your home and possessions. Set aside some time, perhaps on a weekend, to do a room-by-room inventory of your possessions. It’s a good idea to take photos or videos. Write down serial/model numbers, purchase dates, prices and, for art or jewelry, appraisal values.

If a storm or other disaster causes damage in your home, you can then take a new set of photos and videos to show the damage. Store the photos/videos and inventory document in that safe box at home; keep a duplicate set either uploaded to the cloud (digital records) or stored in a bank’s safe deposit box (paper copies).

When a Storm Hits

Another important way to prepare for a storm or natural disaster is to pre-select the damage restoration company you will use. SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield is ready and able to come out to your home promptly, evaluate the damage, create a plan to remediate it, then go to work on cleaning and restoring your possessions and your home to before-storm condition.
