Have You Cleaned Your Cellphone Lately?

3/19/2021 (Permalink)

A man uses a cellphone in a crowd According to the CDC, you should disinfect your cellphone two or three times a week. Here's how (and why)!

We’ve all become more health-conscious and germ-conscious over the last year. With that in mind, SERVPRO wants to draw your attention to one way you’re probably exposing yourself to more germs without even thinking about it.

It’s your cellphone. You use it all day long, barely aware of how you touch other objects and surfaces—then you reach for the phone. You eat, you scroll. You shop, you answer the phone. You pump gas, you tap and swipe.

Unfortunately, according to a University of Arizona study cellphones carry ten times more bacteria than a toilet seat! Do we have your attention now?

General Guidelines for a Cleaner Cellphone

The key is to be more aware of cross-contamination. When you touch something else, try to wash your hands or at least use hand sanitizer before you use your phone.

  • Eating: put your phone away and wash your hands when done
  • Out and about: stock up on wipes or hand sanitizer for when you can’t use soap and water
  • In the bathroom: nope!

When and How to Disinfect Your Cellphone

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises that you regularly clean all high-touch surfaces in your home or place of business, and that includes your phone!

SERVPRO recommends getting a fresh start whenever you return home: wipe down your phone with a soft, dry cloth.

SERVPRO also advises disinfecting your phone two or three times a week. Here’s how:

  • Use disinfecting wipes instead of bleach or bathroom cleaners. Never use abrasive cleansers or scrubbers
  • Start by taking the phone out of its case and wiping both with a soft dry cloth
  • Using disinfecting wipes, clean the phone and the case, getting at all the ports and buttons without oversaturating the surface
  • After air-drying the phone for five minutes, wipe it dry with a new soft cloth

Now, About the Rest of Your Home or Business ...

Face it, all the high-touch surfaces in our homes and businesses need to be cleaned, too. To meet 2020’s unique health challenges, SERVPRO launched Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, a new service that offers an industry-standard proactive viral pathogen cleaning featuring hospital-grade cleansers and CDC-standards for the deepest cleaning.
