Pack a Medication Go-Bag for Emergencies

Be prepared for a sudden natural disaster emergency with a well-stocked medication go-bag.

A well-stocked medication go-bag can save your life during a hurricane, flood, fire or other emergency. But don’t wait until a storm threatens.

Whether you buy a kit from a drugstore or build it yourself, keep a medication go-bag on hand that includes: 

• At least seven days’ worth of over-the-counter and prescription medications you take on a regular basis
• A copy of your health insurance card
• An antihistamine for allergic reactions
• Pain relievers
• Stomach, antacid and antidiarrheal remedies
• Antiseptic wipes; an antibiotic ointment; and bandages, gauze and tape, for treating burns, cuts and wounds
• Mosquito repellent and aloe gel, hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion
• Eyewash solution
• Water-purification tablets
• Scissors and tweezers
• Thermometer

If you and your family have special medical needs, keep a more sophisticated kit—stocked with hearing aids with extra batteries, an epinephrine auto-injector, glasses, contact lenses or syringes, for example.
