You're safest in a building during a thunderstorm. These tips will keep you even safer.

Summer is peak season for thunderstorms and lightning. If you’re at home when a storm hits, here are ways to stay safe:

• Watching television or going online may seem like good ways to pass the time, but you should unplug televisions, computers and any other high-value electronics well before the storm hits.
• Don’t touch electrical equipment or cords, including corded phones (it’s okay to use cell or cordless phones).
• Stay away from windows, doors and porches.
• Avoid taking baths or showers. Water conducts electricity so if lightning strikes your house, it may travel through water and shock you.

If you think your home has been struck by lightning:

• Call 911 immediately and evacuate if you see fire or smoke. Ask your fire department to check for hot spots in your walls.
• If you use gas for heating and cooking, contact your gas company or a licensed contractor to test for leaks before re-entering your home. Gas system components can be punctured by direct or nearby lightning strikes.

Important: If you are outside and hear thunder, stop all outdoor activities and immediately get into a building or a hard-topped vehicle for safety.
