Understanding Mansfield Mold Damage and its Removal

9/20/2022 (Permalink)

IICRC trained poster Count on SERVPRO's IICRC-certified technicians for the mold remediation of your Mansfield property to make it appear "Like it never even happened."

Removing Mold Damage Quickly in Mansfield

With severe weather and year-round humidity a concern for the area, microbial growth and fungal spores in homes and businesses can often develop into more significant problems. Certain areas of the property are more prone to facilitating these colonies than others. SERVPRO professionals can expect to encounter mold organisms in:

  • Bathrooms
  • Basements
  • Attics
  • Kitchens
  • Laundry Rooms
  • Crawlspaces

Mansfield mold damage can be more than a physical threat to your property. While it is true that microbial colonies destroy organic matter, the infestation makes a comfortable living for the household a challenge. Our experienced remediators can help when you need it.

How Do You Know Mold is in Your Home?

Suspecting mold and confirming mold are two very different steps. The presence of moisture in your home is rarely enough to validate suspicions. In most cases, you are looking for clear, indicative signs that colonies have taken root in hosting materials, such as strong, musty smells in the environment or visible spotting on drywall and carpeting.

Inspection and Remediation Planning

One of the earlier actions that our professionals can take to help is to inspect the property. It is often overwhelming to consider the magnitude of spreading organisms, but our SERVPRO team of AMRT applied microbial remediation technicians can thoroughly assess involved spaces to create a direct restoration and remediation plan. We can minimally utilize approaches like controlled demolition in this exploratory stage to track mold damage into wall systems and various testing options.

Clearing Active Colonies from Your Home

Colonies can be present in different severities and impact several hosting materials. Using a combination of remediation strategies, we must overcome these threats as they exist. Typical options here include:

  • Surface Cleaning – The least invasive and aggressive surface cleaning involves sporicidal products and antimicrobial solutions in our inventory scrubbed into the surface of hosting materials to eliminate spores.
  • Dry Ice Blasting - SERVPRO can pressurize sodium bicarbonate, dry ice, walnuts, and countless other abrasive media with water or air to blast away surface mold threats on semi-porous materials.
  • Removing Materials – The last resort for mold removal is eliminating the affected material. Controlled demolition is a straightforward and effective solution for remediation.

Mold Damage Repairs Are Needed

Many threats to your home after a mold incident can compromise structural integrity. It is essential to overcome these concerns promptly to prevent the situation from worsening as remediation nears completion, the project shifts to build-back and repairs with our general contractor license. Keeping this work in-house makes it easier for projects to be completed quickly and correctly, not to mention at a more reasonable cost for the customer. After mold threats to a residence, build-back needs may include:

  • Plumbing Repairs
  • Mold Prevention
  • Material Replacement

Removing Mold Malodors After Remediation

One of the lingering impacts of mold damage on your property is a robust and musty odor. Volatile organic compounds are emitted from active colonies in your home, which your nose can quickly identify in the structure near where colonization occurs. Encountering musty smells can often be an initial line of defense in getting remediation work started, but completely removing these strong odors requires more than surface cleaning approaches. We have potent deodorants and neutralizing equipment to manage open-air threats and trapped smells.

Mansfield mold damage is more common for homes and businesses than property management might think. Professional remediation services are vital to protecting a structure as challenging as these organisms can be and the rapid rate it spreads. Our SERVPRO of Manchester / Mansfield team is ready to help when you call (860) 461-7194.

Why SERVPRO Cleans Up Your Water Damage ASAP

11/18/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO employees, equipment and vehicles Call SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield to clean up your water, fire, storm or other emergency. We'll get there fast and stop the damage ASAP!

Water disasters—and storm, wind, fire, biohazard and other emergencies—hit quickly and usually with no warning. If it’s your home or business that has been damaged, you need help ASAP. Our time-tested process starts when we arrive promptly at your home or business. We expertly assess the damage, then develop your remediation plan. In many cases, we’ll take immediate action to halt the disaster in its tracks; this may involve tarping or boarding over your roof or windows, or other methods. Our next step is to create a digital inventory of your salvageable possessions before transporting your furniture and belongings to our central Connecticut warehouse for cleaning and storage. Meanwhile, we clean and restore your home or business facility; this may include reconstruction depending on the severity of the damage. Throughout this process, we communicate with your insurer to expedite your claims processing. Finally, we return the contents of your home or business, with all the damage restored.

Every Minute Counts

SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield wastes no time in responding to your disaster because we know that can minimize the damage, meaning fewer repairs will be required—and that can save you time and money!

A water emergency in particular calls for a rapid response, both to halt the spread of water and to remove the water. Water plus time is a recipe for severe damage to your home or business: floors, walls, furniture and possessions all get soaked.

Here’s what happens if you don’t get the water out quickly.

Within 1 hour

  • Water spreads throughout your home or business, and is absorbed into your walls and floors, furniture and upholstery, and personal belongings
  • Documents, books, photos and other paper items swell and warp
  • Furniture finishes begin staining your carpet

Within 1 day

  • Drywall begins to swell and degrade
  • Metal surfaces start to tarnish
  • Wooden furniture begins to swell and crack
  • You’ll notice a musty odor

Within 1 week

  • After just 48 hours, mold and mildew can begin to grow
  • Structural damage occurs as doors, windows, floors and studs swell and warp; paint begins to blister
  • Metal begins to rust and corrode

After just one week without cleanup, the time and cost of restoring your home or business will increase drastically. The more time that goes by, the harder it will be to salvage possessions and furnishings, and the more likely it is that reconstruction will be needed. On top of that, a mold infestation will necessitate a serious remediation effort. Avoid all that hassle by calling SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield ASAP!

When DIY Projects Go Wrong, Call SERVPRO

5/5/2021 (Permalink)

Water pooling on a basement floor Call SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield if your DIY project goes bad, or if you're considering DIY-ing your water or fire damage.

DIY (do it yourself)—taking on your own home repair and improvement projects—is a huge multibillion dollar industry, which means that lots and lots of Americans are tackling their own work. DIY can save homeowners a lot of money, but unfortunately in many cases, it can lead to more expenses and hassle than hiring a pro in the first place.

Improvenet, which is an online referral service for remodelers, surveyed 2,000 homeowners about DIY successes and failures. Surprisingly, almost two-thirds of the respondents had regrets about taking on at least one of their DIY projects. And in a third of those instances, the homeowner ended up calling in a professional to fix their mistakes—meaning that roughly one out of every five DIY-ers in the survey had a project go so wrong that a pro had to redo their work!

Wait, there’s more: one out of twelve respondents had actually damaged their own home with DIY projects, and one in sixteen had caused injury to themselves or a family member or friend while DIY-ing.

DIY After Water or Fire Damage? Call SERVPRO Instead

After a water disaster, such as basement or appliance flooding, many homeowners attempt to do the cleanup and repair themselves. Unfortunately, without the right equipment, such as powerful wet vacs, air movers and sensitive measuring devices, most homeowners simply can’t remove all the water quickly enough to prevent further damage, creating the potential for a hidden mold infestation. The pros at SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield know exactly what to do—and they do it fast and completely so you can put the water damage behind you.

Even a small fire at your home can create lingering damage that’s difficult for a DIY-er to fully eradicate. First there are structural questions: is your home safe or will you need extensive repairs? Then there are cleaning issues. A fire leaves not only damage from the flames, but also from the smoke, soot and the water used to extinguish the flames. That can be a mess that requires specialized cleaning methods and products. The smell alone from a fire can linger and permeate every object in your home. SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield will not only assure that your structure is safe, they will clean and deodorize everything in your home, including your clothes.

So, whether your damage is from a fire or water disaster—or from a DIY project gone bad—call SERVPRO for the quickest and best damage remediation services. We even work with your insurer to speed up your claims!

Top Rated Sewage Cleaning Company in Manchester CT

Top Rated Sewage Cleaning Company in Manchester CT Top Rated Sewage Cleaning Company in Manchester CT

When sewage backs up into your home, you should never try to handle it on your own. Sewage water doesn't just cause damage. It often creates a serious health hazard. SERVPRO professional sewage cleanup services eliminate the contamination that can make you sick. We’re the best sewage cleaning Company in Manchester CT because we have the expertise to return your home to its pre-sewer damage condition.

Even when sewage looks like harmless water, it sometimes contains bacteria, viruses, and parasites. These and other microorganisms cause multiple health issues. The best way to minimize your risk is by distancing your family and pets from contaminated areas while we complete our emergency sewage cleanup process.

At SERVPRO, we have earned our reputation as a top-rated sewage cleaning company in Manchester CT.

  • We are SERVPRO-trained, sewage damage restoration professionals.

  • We respond to your sewage cleanup call 24/7.

  • We work fast to minimize damage and deterioration.

  • We use specialized equipment and effective cleaning solutions.

Quality Sewage Cleaning Company in Manchester CT

Water from a sewage backup behaves like ordinary floodwater but it’s far more dangerous. Waterborne contaminants in sewage cause a long list of diseases. These include stomach flu, giardiasis parasites, hepatitis A, and many others. When a backup occurs, our sewage cleanup professionals clean up the sewage and eliminate these disease-causing contaminants.

You may experience a sewage backup in your basement, but backups also affect plumbing in other areas of your home. When water enters your home, the color indicates the nature and extent of your sewage contamination.

  • Clear Water: Clear water doesn’t usually contain high levels of raw sewage. Still, it creates perfect conditions for bacteria, mold, mildew, and other contaminants to develop and thrive.

  • Gray Water: Sewage often changes water from clear to gray. It’s usually untreated sewage, which can cause multiple health problems. Touching or ingesting gray water can make your family members and pets sick.

  • Black Water: Dark water from a sewage line usually contains high levels of untreated sewage. Touching or ingesting black water or contacting contaminated surfaces can cause disease. If contaminants become airborne, inhaling them can also make you sick.

Our Sewage Removal and Cleanup Services

When you need a residential sewage cleaning company in Manchester CT, SERVPRO responds 24/7. We arrive with specialized equipment, industrial solutions, and protective gear. We employ a multi-step sewage cleanup process to do the job right.

Inspection and Damage Assessment

Our sewage cleaning company in Manchester CT begins cleanup by assessing the damage. We do a quick walkthrough, looking for areas of visible and hidden damage. Once we identify your problems, we begin cleanup, repair, and restoration.

Separating Property

When sewage water enters your home, it doesn’t contaminate everything. We search for undamaged, uncontaminated property and move it to a safe dry location. This reduces your financial loss by preventing wet contaminated personal property from damaging dry property.

Sewer Water Cleanup and Extraction

We are a professional sewage cleaning company in Manchester CT. We understand that water removal is critical so we get it done as quickly as possible. When furniture, fabrics, flooring, and other porous surfaces remain saturated, they continuously deteriorate. Mold, mildew, and other contaminants grow and thrive. We minimize this possibility by using industrial water extraction equipment to remove water as rapidly as possible.

Drying Out Your Property

Extraction removes most of the sewage-contaminated water but residual dampness often causes additional problems. Damp surfaces dry over time, but mold, mildew, and other contaminants take control very quickly. We avoid this by completing the drying process with industrial dryers.

Dehumidifying the Air

Moisture often lingers in the air even after the dry-out. It dampens previously dried surfaces and provides an environment for contaminants to grow. We implement a precision dehumidification process that prevents this. We measure the area and calculate the relative humidity and room temperature. Have You Cleaned Your Cellphone Lately?

3/19/2021 (Permalink)

A man uses a cellphone in a crowd According to the CDC, you should disinfect your cellphone two or three times a week. Here's how (and why)!

We’ve all become more health-conscious and germ-conscious over the last year. With that in mind, SERVPRO wants to draw your attention to one way you’re probably exposing yourself to more germs without even thinking about it.

It’s your cellphone. You use it all day long, barely aware of how you touch other objects and surfaces—then you reach for the phone. You eat, you scroll. You shop, you answer the phone. You pump gas, you tap and swipe.

Unfortunately, according to a University of Arizona study cellphones carry ten times more bacteria than a toilet seat! Do we have your attention now?

General Guidelines for a Cleaner Cellphone

The key is to be more aware of cross-contamination. When you touch something else, try to wash your hands or at least use hand sanitizer before you use your phone.

  • Eating: put your phone away and wash your hands when done
  • Out and about: stock up on wipes or hand sanitizer for when you can’t use soap and water
  • In the bathroom: nope!

When and How to Disinfect Your Cellphone

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises that you regularly clean all high-touch surfaces in your home or place of business, and that includes your phone!

SERVPRO recommends getting a fresh start whenever you return home: wipe down your phone with a soft, dry cloth.

SERVPRO also advises disinfecting your phone two or three times a week. Here’s how:

  • Use disinfecting wipes instead of bleach or bathroom cleaners. Never use abrasive cleansers or scrubbers
  • Start by taking the phone out of its case and wiping both with a soft dry cloth
  • Using disinfecting wipes, clean the phone and the case, getting at all the ports and buttons without oversaturating the surface
  • After air-drying the phone for five minutes, wipe it dry with a new soft cloth

Now, About the Rest of Your Home or Business ...

Face it, all the high-touch surfaces in our homes and businesses need to be cleaned, too. To meet 2020’s unique health challenges, SERVPRO launched Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, a new service that offers an industry-standard proactive viral pathogen cleaning featuring hospital-grade cleansers and CDC-standards for the deepest cleaning.

SERVPRO Met the Challenges of 2020

3/19/2021 (Permalink)

Entrepreneur Magazine Top Ten badge SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield is proud to be part of a thriving company that helps people recover when they have suffered a disaster.

The year 2020 was one of the most challenging years Americans have collectively faced in a long time. We experienced the pandemic, its resulting economic distress, disrupted routines, challenges to mental and physical health, and yet another record-setting year of damaging storms and wildfires. Through all this, SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield is proud to be a part of a corporation that not only weathered the challenges, but thrived.

For the first time since 2016, SERVPRO regained its place as one of Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top 10 overall franchise opportunities—while retaining our position as the #1 cleaning and restoration industry franchise (that makes nearly 20 years in a row!).

“In 2020, SERVPRO franchises across the U.S. and Canada responded to numerous natural disasters, such as hurricanes along the Gulf Coast and East Coast and wildfires in the West. But it was the launch of SERVPRO’s new disinfecting and COVID-19 cleanup service that tested and proved the company’s resolve,” CEO Rick Isaacson said.

The SERVPRO Team Stepped Up

“SERVPRO’s #10 overall ranking is a result of the hard work our franchises, their crews, and our dedicated headquarters team put in while many businesses were not so lucky,” Isaacson said. “So many businesses were negatively impacted, slowed or closed due to the pandemic. When COVID forced much of the world to slow down or step back, our team stepped up and did what it took, whether that was cleaning businesses so they could reopen safely or disinfecting first responders’ vehicles—many of those at no cost—to give back to those working every day to keep us safe. We’re basically a first-response company, so we go in when everyone else is running out.”

SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield is one of four central Connecticut SERVPRO franchises owned and managed by Ralph and Noemi DiCristofaro, who hold themselves and their employees to an even higher standard than that of SERVPRO corporate. As a result, they have won many awards from SERVPRO corporate, in recognition of their commitment to providing quality cleaning and restoration services, as well as superior customer service. You can rely on the cleanup and restoration experts at SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield to be here for you—in good times and bad!

Documents Damaged by Water or Fire? Call SERVPRO

11/20/2020 (Permalink)

A pile of damaged documents and books Trust the pros at SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield to restore your important documents when they've been damaged by fire or water.

Think about what you would have to do after a fire or water emergency in your home or business: stop the damage from getting worse, evaluate the situation and make a plan to remediate the damage, remove the ruined items, repair or replace your damaged structure, inventory and clean your damaged possessions, work with your insurance company to cover the expenses, and then, finally, restore everything back into your structure. That’s a huge, specialized job—which SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield handles every single day for our customers.

Now, think about some of those damaged items: your important documents. These are not so easily replaced, which is why trusting SERVPRO’s experts to restore your salvageable papers is the best way to preserve these valuable items.

What Kind of Documents Need Restoration?

Homeowners often have lots of important papers stored in their houses:

How SERVPRO Approaches Document Restoration

SERVPRO takes your damaged documents seriously—we know it’s not “just paper.” Our crew members have years of training and experience, and they use the latest technology and tools to restore these delicate objects.

Our sophisticated techniques include these state-of-the-art processes:

  • Gamma irradiation: documents that have been exposed to floodwaters, sewage, toxins or biohazards are treated to sterilize and remove pathogens.
  • Vacuum freeze-drying: water-damaged documents are restored with the same advanced technology used by the Library of Congress, the National Archives and Records Administration and the General Service Administration.

When we arrive at your home or business, we begin by evaluating and inventorying your documents. We remove the salvageable items to our secure facility in central Connecticut, where our crews restore the documents under round-the-clock video surveillance in accordance with HIPAA standards.

SERVPRO Cleaning Offers Protection Against Virus

4/30/2020 (Permalink)

An illustration of a coronavirus cell Help prevent the transmission of a viral pathogen by having SERVPRO's experts clean and disinfect your home or business.

In addition to our established expertise in disaster recovery and cleanup for homes and businesses, SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield also offers professional cleaning services. Lots of commercial customers use our services on a regular basis to maintain a consistently high level of cleanliness, and homeowners call us in, too, for a thorough deep-clean.

But now, with an increased awareness of the damage that can be caused by a pathogen circulating the globe—as yet immune to any treatment or vaccine—many homeowners and business owners seek extra reassurance that their homes and facilities are thoroughly clean and disinfected.

In response, SERVPRO offers proactive cleaning, sanitizing and disinfection of commercial and residential properties to minimize the transmission of emergent viral pathogens. With SERVPRO’s proactive cleaning services, you’ll know you have done all you can to keep your family and friends, customers and employees safe and healthy.

How Viruses Spread

Many viruses are spread primarily through personal contact, between people who are within about six feet of one another, through airborne respiratory droplets that are produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It may also be possible to catch a virus by first touching a surface or object that has the virus on it, then touching your mouth, nose or eyes.

Your very best source for the latest and most accurate information on emerging pathogens and ways to avoid transmission is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). (We at SERVPRO encourage you to check back with the CDC frequently for updates.)

Along with avoiding large crowds and keeping a social (about six-foot) distance from others, the most common advice from experts on staying virus-free is to wash hands frequently and avoid touching our faces. That is because viruses can also be spread by contamination on objects, furniture and fixtures in the home or place of work.

According to the CDC, “Cleaning of visibly dirty surfaces followed by disinfection is a best practice measure for prevention of … viral respiratory illnesses in households and community settings.” And that’s where a skilled, equipped cleaning company, staffed with highly trained professionals, comes in: SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield is prepared—right now—to clean, sanitize and disinfect your home or business to eradicate traces of viral or bacterial pathogens.

Whether you seek strictly proactive cleaning, with no indication of existing pathogen contamination, or are aware that your structure may have been contaminated, SERVPRO’s crews stand ready to provide increased assurance that you, your family, your customers and your employees will not be exposed within your building.

An Important Caveat

While SERVPRO’s cleaning process will remove existing viral pathogens, please understand that structures we clean proactively will not be protected from future contamination if an infected person is to enter the building.

Why SERVPRO for Proactive Cleaning?

SERVPRO is uniquely ready to provide proactive cleaning of viral pathogens for several reasons, all of which stem from the level of expertise and preparation that we maintain at any time, pandemic or no pandemic. We were ready for this.

Our Personnel

We are fully staffed and prepared for your most difficult job. Our employees are thoroughly trained in the use of all our equipment and cleaning products—and they are supported in their work by our rigorous safety training and procedures.

SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield is one of four SERVPRO franchises in the central Connecticut region owned and operated by Ralph and Noemi DiCristofaro (the others are SERVPRO of Bloomfield/Enfield, SERVPRO of Glastonbury/Wethersfield and SERVPRO of West Hartford).

Being able to call on the resources of these other top-performing local SERVPRO franchises means we’re ready for just about anything! We can get to you faster, and we allocate staff and equipment as needed to tackle the really big, urgent jobs. Among the four franchises, we have at our disposal thousands of different pieces of equipment and dozens of trucks and other vehicles.

Our Protective Gear

SERVPRO professionals will enter your facility wearing the proper types of protective gear. For example, if there is no indication that your facility or home has been contaminated by viral or bacterial pathogens, our crew will wear a mid-grade protective suit, but if contamination is suspected or confirmed, all workers will wear a top-grade suit, which is thicker and has integrated boots and hoods. Not only do we wear an N-95 mask, but per our safety procedures and training, each mask is fit-tested to each employee to ensure complete coverage and protection.

Our Products

The cleaning and disinfecting products we use for jobs are hospital-grade, which means they are both safe to use and effective at killing germs. These CDC-recommended products can be difficult, if not impossible, for other vendors to locate, but SERVPRO was prepared and has secured access to a substantial supply.

Our Methods

We attack contamination in your home or place of business through two different modes of cleaning. First, we seal off your building and fog it using sprayers and misters, a process that allows our cleaning and disinfecting agents to reach deep into crevices that would otherwise remain untouched.

We follow that up with thorough corona virus cleaning and disinfecting of all the flat surfaces of your structure, furniture, fixtures and objects. No cutting corners here: our crews adhere to the correct amount of time to leaving the disinfectant in place to kill the germs that are present.

Our Coverage

Finally, SERVPRO provides this admittedly risky cleaning service at no potential liability to you. As a professional damage restoration and cleaning company, part of a network of more than 1,800 franchises across the United States, SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield is fully insured against any hazards we may encounter in our work. If you are concerned about potential or suspected pathogen contamination in your home or business, you need not be worried about any additional liability.

Who Does SERVPRO Provide Proactive Cleaning For?

Homeowners (who suspect contamination or not) hire SERVPRO for proactive cleaning as a way to regain peace of mind that residents of the home will reduce their chances of exposure.

Likewise, business owners can keep their employees and customers safer with our proactive cleaning service. This has a two-fold benefit in a time of widespread worry: the direct benefit, of course, is knowing that you are doing everything you can to keep Americans healthy.

The indirect benefit of this proactive action is that you reassure your customers that your place of business is a safe place to be.

Many types of businesses can benefit from SERVPRO’s proactive cleaning that targets viral and bacterial pathogens:

  • Retail stores
  • Restaurants
  • Offices, especially medical offices
  • Schools
  • Senior centers
  • Gyms
  • Banks
  • Hotels, B&Bs and other hospitality sites

How We Clean and Disinfect

Cleaning: Porous and Non-Porous Surfaces

We begin by cleaning porous and non-porous surfaces. The cleaning process lowers the numbers of germs, thus reducing the risk of infection.

The CDC describes cleaning as removing germs, dirt and impurities from surfaces or objects. Cleaning works by using a detergent and water to physically remove germs from surfaces. This process does not necessarily kill germs, but by removing them, it lowers their numbers and the risk of spreading infection.

Some materials cannot be cleaned with detergent and water without being damaged. For this reason, paper and paper products are not able to be cleaned and/or disinfected.

Cleaning methods typically used on water-sensitive materials, such as vacuuming or dry sponging, are not capable of removing enough soil and residue to be effective. Porous materials, like carpet, area rugs, upholstered items and draperies that are not water-sensitive, are wet-cleaned using a hot water extraction or preconditioner and rinse method.

Non-porous materials, like hard-surface floors, cabinets, countertops, doorknobs and plumbing fixtures, can be wet-cleaned using a variety of SERVPRO hard-surface cleaners (general purpose) and cleaning methods.

Disinfecting: Non-Porous Surfaces

Next, we disinfect non-porous surfaces by using hospital-grade chemicals to kill germs on surfaces or objects. (It is important to understand that not all surfaces can be disinfected. Because of the porosity of some materials, including carpet, area rugs, upholstered items and draperies, disinfection is not possible.)

We use a variety of disinfectants within the SERVPRO product line to disinfect non-porous materials, like hard-surface floors, cabinets, countertops, doorknobs and plumbing fixtures. We apply these disinfectants using a spray bottle, pump-up sprayer, electric sprayer or mister. Once thoroughly sprayed, we allow the disinfectant to remain on the surface for ten minutes, sufficient to kill germs.

The CDC encourages the use of disinfecting wipes on electronic items that are touched often, such as phones and computers. If necessary, we use more than one wipe to keep the surface wet for the recommended length of contact time.

Safety Measures

SERVPRO professionals are thoroughly trained and equipped to handle potentially contaminated areas and materials. Throughout the cleaning project, our workers wear personal protective equipment, including appropriate protective suit with integrated hood and boots, N-95 respirators, nitrile gloves and goggles.

As our crews work, we clean and disinfect our own tools and equipment to avoid spreading any contamination in your home or place of business.

Once the job is done, we bag, remove and dispose of all waste, including used gloves and disposable respirators, and bag and remove cleaning towels to the SERVPRO facility for laundering.

How We Track and Care for Your Possessions

3/21/2020 (Permalink)

Shrink-wrapped furniture and items in a storage container Rest assured that your possessions are securely cared for by SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield after you have suffered a home disaster.

Where do you start when your home and possessions have been hit by a fire, smoke, water, sewage or storm disaster? There’s damage to your home to be repaired, and most likely, damage to your furniture and personal items, too. A phone call to SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield will begin the process of restoring your home and possessions.

It can be difficult to see everything you own packed up and removed from your home. That’s why SERVPRO recently upgraded its inventory system and processes. Now, your possessions are securely tracked—end-to-end—while we clean and store them and repair your home. The heart of our process is a computer-based tracking system that shows at a glance exactly where in our warehouse your items are and what work has been or needs to be done to fully restore them.

We Care for All Your Possessions

SERVPRO will take care of 100% of the items in your home, both what needs restoration and what requires storage only. Once our project manager has scoped out the scale of work to be done on the structure, he or she determines what needs to be done to restore each item. Then, our crew individually labels everything with your name and unique QR-code, then photographs each item. Next, we securely wrap the objects: furniture in blankets and plastic wrap, glass in bubble wrap and plastic wrap, etc. We box your smaller personal items, then photograph and label them.

You are there to witness the entire process. Once all is wrapped, boxed and loaded into storage containers or vaults (the container, too, is labeled and QR-coded), you sign off on a form listing all the items with the pre-wrap photos. (This list will also provide valuable information to expedite your insurance claim.)

We Maintain an Unbroken Chain of Custody

The whole time we are storing and cleaning your possessions, we ensure an unbroken chain of custody. With a scan of the QR code, SERVPRO staff can immediately tell where an item is. We’ll know if the item requires cleaning, is being cleaned, has been cleaned (and when) or is waiting in a secure storage container. (SERVPRO contracts with trusted specialty cleaners to restore certain items, such as smoke-damaged clothing, or unique possessions, such as pianos or pool tables.)

At our centralized warehouse and processing facility in Bloomfield (built in 2015 and one of the largest SERVPRO warehouses in the U.S.), we dedicate multiple large rooms solely to storage. If a homeowner needs to access items early—documents required for insurance claims or the contents of a room that’s ready to be set up, for example—our inventory system quickly shows us exactly where they are.

Finally, after your home has been restored to pre-damage condition and all your items have been returned, you review and sign off on the original tracking form to ensure that everything is present, clean and in good condition.

SERVPRO knows that after a disaster, nothing matters more than restoring your home and possessions “Like it never even happened.” Rely on SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield to care for your furniture and personal items professionally, securely and respectfully and get your daily life back to the way it was!

Help Your Home Sell Faster with Our Proactive Cleaning Service

3/19/2020 (Permalink)

A "For Sale" sign in front of a house SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield delivers proactive cleaning services for a clean, safe and ready-to-sell home.

Real estate agents know that a clean and fresh-smelling home sells faster—but it’s about more than just smelling good. Especially when Americans are concerned about coronavirus exposure, it is essential that any home going on the market be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized, both for the owner’s and potential buyers’ peace of mind.

Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that "transmission of novel coronavirus to persons from surfaces contaminated with the virus has not been documented," research suggests the coronavirus can live on surfaces from a few hours to a few days. Therefore, it may also be possible to catch the virus by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it, then touching your mouth, nose or eyes. The CDC also says, “Cleaning of visibly dirty surfaces followed by disinfection is a best practice measure for prevention of COVID-19 and other viral respiratory illnesses in households and community settings.”

Beyond the relief sellers and buyers will feel knowing that the risk of coronavirus or other pathogen has been greatly reduced, SERVPRO’s home cleaning can result in:

  • an increased market value
  • a more easily-passed home inspection
  • a faster sale

Proactive Cleaning in a Time of Virus

3/10/2020 (Permalink)

Text: Covid-19 against a global map Our proactive cleaning service will clean and disinfect your home or business, giving you peace of mind in a time of uncertainty.

With the threat of a new coronavirus, which causes Covid-19 disease, circulating the globe, many homeowners and business owners are seeking extra reassurance that their homes and facilities are thoroughly clean and disinfected. In addition to our expertise in disaster recovery and cleanup for homes and businesses, SERVPRO also offers these professional cleaning services.

In response, SERVPRO is now offering proactive cleaning, sanitizing and disinfection of commercial and residential properties with the goal of minimizing the transmission of emergent viral pathogens, including the coronavirus. With SERVPRO’s proactive cleaning services, you’ll know you have done all you can to keep your family and friends, customers and employees safe from this new and uncertain threat.

Some Background on the Coronavirus and Covid-19

The coronavirus is believed to spread primarily through personal contact, between people who are within about six feet of one another, through airborne respiratory droplets that are produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It may also be possible to catch the virus by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it, then touching your mouth, nose or eyes.

Your very best source for the latest and most accurate information on the coronavirus and Covid-19 is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) website. Because this outbreak is unfolding rapidly and unpredictably, we at SERVPRO encourage you to check back with the CDC frequently for updates.

Declared a pandemic on March 11, 2020 by the World Health Organization (WHO), the coronavirus outbreak has focused the attention of nations, individuals, business and organizations on ways to fight the spread of the virus and minimize the impact of the disease. Along with avoiding large crowds and keeping a social (about six-foot) distance from others, the most common advice from experts is to wash hands frequently and avoid touching our faces. Beyond direct person-to-person transmission, the coronavirus can also be spread by contamination on objects, furniture and fixtures in the home or place of work.

According to the CDC, “Cleaning of visibly dirty surfaces followed by disinfection is a best practice measure for prevention of COVID-19 and other viral respiratory illnesses in households and community settings.”

And that’s where a skilled, equipped cleaning company, staffed with highly trained professionals, comes in: SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield is prepared—right now—to clean, sanitize and disinfect your home or business to eradicate traces of coronavirus or other pathogens.

Whether you seek strictly proactive cleaning, with no indication of existing contamination, or are aware that your structure may have been contaminated with coronavirus, SERVPRO’s crews stand ready to provide increased assurance that you, your family, your customers and your employees will not be exposed to coronavirus within your building.

An Important Caveat

While SERVPRO’s cleaning process will remove existing viral pathogens, including the coronavirus, please understand that structures we clean proactively will not be protected from future coronavirus contamination if an infected person is to enter the building.

For example, if there is no indication that your facility or home has been contaminated by coronavirus, our crew will wear a mid-grade protective suit, but if contamination is suspected or confirmed, all workers will wear a top-grade suit, which is thicker and has integrated boots and hoods. Not only do we wear an N-95 mask, but per our safety procedures and training, each mask is fit-tested to each employee to ensure complete coverage and protection.

Our Products

The cleaning and disinfecting products we use for coronavirus jobs are hospital-grade, which means they are both safe to use and effective at killing germs. These products are difficult, if not impossible, for other vendors to locate, especially in the midst of a virus outbreak, but SERVPRO was prepared and has access to a substantial supply of coronavirus-fighting cleaners and disinfectants.

Our Methods

We attack contamination in your home or place of business through two different modes of cleaning. First, we seal off your building and fog it using sprayers and misters, a process that allows our cleaning and disinfecting agents to reach deep into crevices that would otherwise remain untouched.

We follow that up with thorough cleaning and disinfecting of all the flat surfaces of your structure, furniture, fixtures and objects.

If you are concerned about potential or suspected coronavirus contamination in your home or business, you need not be worried about any additional liability.

Who Does SERVPRO Provide Proactive Cleaning For?

Homeowners (who suspect coronavirus contamination or not) hire SERVPRO for proactive cleaning. Especially when a family member has been diagnosed with Covid-19, our cleaning services are a way to regain peace of mind that other residents of the home will reduce their chances of exposure.

Likewise, business owners can keep their employees and customers safer with our proactive cleaning service. This has a two-fold benefit in a time of widespread worry: the direct benefit, of course, is knowing that you are doing everything you can to keep Americans healthy and reduce the spread of coronavirus.

The indirect benefit of this proactive action is that you reassure your customers that your place of business is a safe place to be. In the midst of this outbreak, we are all looking for reassurance and seeking places we can be safe—without cutting ourselves off from the outside world completely. Let your customers know that your business has taken all the precautions it can through proactive cleaning.

Many types of businesses can benefit from SERVPRO’s proactive cleaning that targets the coronavirus and other pathogens:

  • Retail stores
  • Restaurants
  • Offices, especially medical offices
  • Schools
  • Senior centers
  • Gyms

While there are not yet any disinfectants that have been tested specifically for the coronavirus, we are following CDC recommendations that advise using a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against viruses similar to SARS (CoV-2).

New Safety Steps at SERVPRO

3/9/2020 (Permalink)

A group of employees gathers around a table in a warehouse We make sure all SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield employees get the training and procedures they need to safely do their jobs.

SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield knows that it’s our workers—our crews in the field, warehouse workers and home office staff—who get the job done for our customers, day in and day out. That’s why their health and safety is a priority throughout our company.

In 2019, our franchise owner hired a new safety coordinator, Rhonda, who has more than twenty years of experience in construction and warehouse management. Rhonda says she “likes to learn new things and do different things”—well, these are just some of the new things she and SERVPRO have been working on lately!

General Safety

  • Training programs and videos are now provided in both English and Spanish.
  • Once a month, the safety coordinator meets with crew chiefs to review progress on safety and to determine what new policies or training are needed.

Blood-Borne Pathogen Safety

  • We’ve developed new training in the safe processing and disposal of blood-borne pathogens.
  • Each crew is equipped with a blood-borne pathogen duffel bag containing hazmat suits, thick gloves, tweezers, needle containers and sealable bags for waste disposal.
  • We have metal storage containers in our parking lot, in which bagged blood-borne waste is stored until it is picked up by a vendor for final disposal.

Vehicle Safety

  • We offer new training in the proper operation of forklifts.
  • Trucks and forklifts are inspected every day.
  • Each truck is consistently assigned to a specific crew to increase safe and responsible operation.

Fire Safety

  • We deliver new training in correct use of fire extinguishers, generators and third plug adapters.
  • Each piece of equipment and all trucks are equipped with a third plug adapter, so that our grounded equipment can be used safely even in older homes that lack the third grounding prong.
  • We inspect and date all fire extinguishers each month to ensure they are always ready to use.

Equipment and Product Safety

  • We offer new training in fitting and wearing a respirator mask, including determining if the mask is the right size, fits correctly to the face, is tightly sealed and allows adequate breathing.
  • Each crew and crew chief are equipped with duffel bags containing hard hats, goggles, safety vests, shoulder dolly straps for heavy loads and our chemical information binder.
  • No truck leaves the SERVPRO lot until it is fully inspected and equipped with a first aid kit, an eyewash station and a fire extinguisher.
  • All our SERVPRO cleaning products are documented in a binder that explains appropriate uses, how to use and what protective equipment is required. Not only are our workers up to date on our products, they are prepared to answer customer questions.
  • We provide new training in how to properly lift heavy loads and use shoulder dolly straps.

SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield puts a premium on training our employees to handle any situation, and that includes training and procedures that keep all our workers safe, healthy and ready to respond to your disaster!

SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield recently partnered with two other nearby SERVPRO franchises (owned by the same management team) to clean up a water disaster that numerous other disaster remediation companies couldn’t handle. It began on October 3, 2018 in West Hartford, Connecticut when the region’s water authority was replacing old water and sewer lines. A 60-foot-long section of newly-installed pipe liner collapsed after a rainstorm, causing a blockage that forced waste water into the street. The basements of more than 20 homes up and down the street were flooded, some by up to five feet of water, and four families were displaced.

Expertise in Biohazard Cleanup Needed!

When the SERVPRO team was called to the scene, they discovered a street filled with brown water and homes inundated with the foul-smelling biohazard. They set to work pumping out basements, drying out structures and property and removing damaged items.

Crews and equipment from all three SERVPRO franchises owned by Ralph and Noemi DiCristofaro joined forces to tackle this extraordinary and rapidly-worsening disaster: SERVPRO of Bloomfield/Enfield, SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield and SERVPRO of Glastonbury/Wethersfield. Our sizable resources of equipment and manpower mean we can respond quickly to disasters of just about any size and type: thousands of pieces of equipment, scores of vehicles and more than a hundred professionals. Essential to our work on the West Hartford sewage disaster was our expertise in biohazard cleanup: we are trained in and adhere to all OSHA and state health regulations.

Although other disaster remediation companies were called to the scene, each one dropped out of the project after initial work—they simply weren’t up to the task. In the end, SERVPRO cleaned the majority of the affected houses, drying and disinfecting structures and property. On this incredibly tough and urgent job, SERVPRO safely and promptly restored homes, property and lives.

Your Emergency Plan: SERVPRO Suggestions On Steps To Take Now

11/28/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Disaster The best time to deal with a disaster is before it happens. Have a plan of action. [Photo by Marc Szeglat]

Of course, we’re biased, but we think you have many reasons to choose SERVPRO when it comes to cleanup and restoration services. One reason is that we’re interested in not just helping you deal with the effects water damage, fire damage, and other natural disasters. We’re interested in helping you reduce the likelihood of suffering damage in the first place.

SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield would love to prevent property damage. That’s one reason why we blog about prevention and preparation. The best property damage is the damage that never happens.

We want to put your interests first. No one wants to have to call us and have our beautiful green and orange trucks sent to their house because they’ve suffered a huge loss. Lots of property damage can be avoided or lessened with the right planning and preparation.

Reading this post and others can help reduce your need for cleanup and restoration services. Getting this free educational information is another reason to choose SERVPRO.

Preparation Reduces Your Risk

When an emergency or major natural disaster strikes it’s the people and businesses who are prepared who handle the situation best. Being prepared can reduce the damage, the cost, the risk, and the inconvenience. But many people don’t like to think about and plan for what to do if a disaster strikes.

SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield would like to make planning easier for you. Here are some steps to take now.

1. Create a family communication plan. Know how you will contact each other if a disaster or emergency strikes. Review what you will do in different situations. One idea that’s worked for SERVPRO clients: Have every family member call, text, or email the same relative or friend so you can easily know the whereabouts and condition of everyone. Use someone out of town because they might be in a better position to communicate among separate family members. Make sure everyone in the family knows the phone number.

2. Be prepared to decide whether it’s safer to stay where you are or leave. Understand and plan for both alternatives. Stay tuned in to a news source (internet, TV, radio) for any official emergency instructions. Use all available information to assess your situation. If first responders, like fire fighters, tell you to leave, follow their instructions.

Concerned About Emergency Preparation? Call SERVPRO of Manchester/Mansfield Today. Call 860.649.0836

3. Have a kit that can sustain you and your family in place for three days. Your kit should have a gallon of water per person per day, three days of non-perishable foods (like protein bars, dried fruit, and canned food), medicines you need, flashlights with batteries, blankets, and more. The American Red Cross and other places have ready-made kits and extra supplies available. Prepare another, smaller kit to take with you if you have to get away.

4. Create a plan to get away. Plan how you will assemble your family and anticipate where you will go. Choose several different destinations in different directions in case the natural disaster or emergency blocks one destination. Always keep half a tank or more of gas in your car. Become familiar with alternative routes as well as other means of transportation out of your area.

5. Know the emergency plans at school and work. Talk to your children’s schools and your employer about emergency plans. Find out how they will communicate with families during an emergency. Talk to your neighbors about how you might work together to be safe.
