What to Do If Your Washing Machine Leaks (Part 2)

6/18/2020 (Permalink)

A split washing machine water supply hose A burst water supply hose is a frequent cause of a sudden washing machine leak. Here's how to find the source of the water damage and address it.

Part 1 of this article showed you the actions to take as soon as you discover a leak or flood from your washing machine. Now that you've halted the damage, investigate the source of the leak.

Locate the Leak

Finding the leak starts with observing. Pull the washer away from the back wall to gain access to the hoses. Examine the hoses and connections for dripping or leaking water. Tighten the connection for the hot and cold water supply hoses that run from the back of the washer to the shutoff valves. You may need to replace the hoses—and if they are more than 5 years old, do it anyway.

Check to be sure that the single drain hose, usually located between the two water supply hoses, is secured in place on both ends.

If you are confident that you have solved the flooding by tightening or replacing water hoses, go ahead and run a test. Plug the machine back in and turn the power back on at the circuit breaker. Run a regular wash or rinse-only cycle (with no laundry or detergent) and watch closely for leaking or flooding.

Although a common cause of a sudden leak is a burst hose, washing machine floods can also originate from the base of the washer. The fix could be as simple as re-leveling the washer. If the problem is more serious, you may need to call in an appliance repair specialist or consider replacing the washer—note that the average life span of a washing machine is 5 to 7 years.
